When I was a kid, it seemed to me that traditionally notated music was just horizontal lines and black dots with sticks on a white sheet of paper. Thatâs why I developed this method of using words, phrases, syllables, and visuals.
When I was teaching my own students, I wanted to make learning to play the drums much easier to understand. So I created a nursery rhyme in place of numbers and notes. Then I gave each drum its own character and named them after the sounds that they make; Boomer, Tapper, Popper, Tom Tom, and Crasher.
Instead of counting âone, two, three, four, etcâŠâ, I created rhythmic patterns of a nursery rhyme that I made up: âI like candy, I like popcorn, I like moviesâ. Then I assigned each word, phrase, and syllable to the corresponding drum characters, visually prompting which drum to hit. I found that my students not only learned how to play their first drum beat with ease but also remained engaged while learning. Without even realizing it, my students learned a basic adaptation of notated drum music through these visuals, which are accompanied by the nursery rhymes.
This led me to creating Jamtooners as a group of five cartoon drum characters that are also instructors. I then animated the characters, created the lessons, and performed the voices of the characters along with my wife Amy, who plays âBoomer."
I created Jamtooners for kids who want to easily learn how to play the drums, all while having fun. Itâs also for kids who are visual learners, like me. Look for more courses from Jamtooners in the future!
